Well, usually a certain scent would trigger a specific emotion that would, in turn, trigger a specific memory. This is the same train of thought that aromachologists have. Aromachologists study different scents and its relation to human behavior.

So how does this work?

Our olfactory bulb actually forms part of our limbic system. This means that it is not under conscious control. Different scents trigger the release of chemicals in our brain causing us to feel certain emotions.

When we inhale a certain fragrance, the odor molecules are caught by the olfactory membrane. The odor molecules stimulate the nerve cell lining which, in turn, triggers impulses to the amygdala as well as other parts of the limbic system.

Now, since the limbic system is directly connected to the area of the brain that controls the heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, stress levels, and memory, essential oils therefore produces an instant effect causing a lowering of the blood pressure, lowering of stress and anxieties, and slowing down of the heart rate.

This does not, however, mean that you can just buy any perfume. Essential oils have a different effect compared to synthetic fragrance oils that can be found in perfumes. Aside from this, pure essential oils also need special handling procedures as most of them need to be mixed with a carrier oil before use.

Essential Oils And Memory Retention

Are you having a hard time committing things to your memory? Our immune system is what keeps us from getting sick from every germ, virus or bacteria that comes along. Factors like stress, fatigue, and poor diet can lower our immune system's ability to fight off invaders. We can support our immune system through the use of essential oils. The use of essential oils while we are healthy will help prevent illness in the first place. For those times when something does get passed our defenses, essential oils can shorten our recovery time.

Immune System Support

Without our immune systems, we would get sick from every germ we encountered. For our immune systems to work at their best, we need to have a healthy diet, low stress level, and get plenty of sleep. This can be a pretty tall order to fill in this day and age. Essential oils can help make up the difference when we are aren't eating right, under a lot of stress, and tired.

Essential oils can provide the body with the vitamins its not getting from our poor diet. These vitamins help the immune system fight off any microbes and pathogens that are trying to infect our bodies. Because essential oils are a natural "enemy" of these invaders, pathogens and microbes have not been shown to be able to develop a resistance to them. Essential oils can also help reduce stress. One way is through aromatherapy. Not only are you inhaling the essential oils into your body, the right combinations of scents can have a calming effect and reduce stress levels. Using the right essential oils, like chamomile in tea, can help us wind down from a hard day and get to sleep, which helps reduce both stress and fatigue.

Shortening Recovery Time

At some point, some microbe is going to get passed even the healthiest of immune systems. When this does happen, it is possible to shorten our recovery time through the use of essential oils. To this end essential oils cane be ingested, inhaled, or applied topically.

Ingestion: Essential oils can be put in teas not only help fight the causes of the cold or flu, but can also relieve symptoms like congestion or a sore throat. There are also supplements that can be taken that contain essential oils.

Inhalation: Essential oils can be added to an air diffuser, humidifier, or hot bath, which puts them in the air you are breathing. Add 5 - 10 drops of one or more essential oils to a air diffuser or humidifier and the room will become rich with microbe fighting essential oils that you will breathe in with every breath. Adding up to 10 drops to a hot bath will enrich the steam from the bath with essential oils. Both the steam and the oils can help loosen congestion as well. An added benefit of putting essential oils in the air is that they can remove any microbes from the air, which means you are not having to fight off new infection in addition to recovering from the current one.

Topically: Essential oils diluted in a lotion or carrier oil such as grape seed or apricot and rubbed on the chest can help ease congestion. They can also be added to a hot or cold compress applied to the chest can also help. The best oils for easing congestion are ginger, myrrh, and sandalwood.

Which Essential Oils to Use

Always dilute essential oils before use.

Bay Laurel: This oil can be diluted and applied directly to the lymph nodes, which will support the immune system's fight against the infection. It can also be used in a hot shower where the steam will open pores and allow the skin to absorb it more effectively. A drop added to tea can also soothe a sore throat.

Cinnamon: This is a hot oil, which will heat up when it comes in contact with your skin. It supports a healthy digestive system, which in turn helps our bodies fight off infection. It should be applied to the feet or added to a diffuser and inhaled.

Eucalyptus: This oil can be mixed with lotion or a carrier oil and applied to the chest, neck, and shoulders to help ease breathing. Added to a diffuser or humidifier can ease congestion and help the body cleanse itself.

Lemon: Adding lemon oil to water, only a drop or two is needed, is a great way to boost the immune system. It should not be applied to the skin as it is photosensitive.

Oregano: This oil, which will heat up on contact with skin, is best applied to the bottoms of the feet or the back and shoulders. The heat and tingling can help ease some of the discomfort from symptoms.

Peppermint: This is a very versatile oil, it can be ingested in tea, applied to the skin, or inhaled. Peppermint helps ease congestion and can aid the respiratory system. It can also be added to a diffuser or humidifier to help open airways and ease the discomfort of some cold or flu symptoms.

Caring For Oily SKin

Oily Skin, as opposed to dry skin, produces too much sebum. It usually has large pores, blemishes and acne. Oily skin is also prone to blackheads. The excessive production of sebum can be due to a host of different factors such as genetic predisposition, diet, changes in the hormone levels, and presence of hot and humid weather.

Here are some ways on how you can take care of our oily skin:

(1) Essential Oils. Just because an oily skin has more than its needed supply of sebum doesn’t mean that using essential oils on it would be too much. Certain essential oils, on the contrary, can help your skin in balancing its oil content. This includes essential oils from Cedarwood, Lemon and Rosemary.

(2) Good ‘ol water and soap. Make sure that you use only gentle soap as the harsh ones can strip your skin of oils which can lead to reactive seborrhea. You can., however, use medicated soaps. As much as possible also, use mineral water instead of tap water and warm water (not boiling hot) over cold water.

(3) Make use of oil-free moisturizers. This makes it possible for your skin to be shine-free.

(4) If you want to go natural, you can try half teaspoon of lime and cucumber juice for your face.

(5) Eat a lot of green, leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. Eat also food rich in protein but limit your intake of sugar and salt. Reduce also the amount of fats that you take in.

One good thing about oily skin, however, is that it ages slowly than other skin types.

Taking Care of Dry Skin

As most people worry about oily skin, a few percentage actually dread dry skin. Dry skin happens when you have low level of sebum on your skin. It could also be the result of a genetic predisposition, serious skin complications brought about by diabetes, or an underactive thyroid. It can be quite sensitive and, at times, could even become chapped and cracked which, in turn, could become infected.

So how does one go about taking care of dry skin? Here are a few tips on what you can do:

1. Avoid the use of hot water as well as tap water. The minerals that can be found in tap water might be too heavy for your skin.

2. Regular massage your skin in order to stimulate production of oil.

3. It has often been said but rarely followed - use a moisturizer! Apply this, however, after bath, and use only the right amount. Don't overdo it!

4. Use products that have neutral pH. Stay away from the alkalinic ones.

5. Do not wipe your face dry. Just pat it. Wiping can damage your skin cells as well as cause infection.

6. Drink lots of water, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get enough sleep. Rehydrating from within does a lot not only to your skin but to your whole body as well.

7. When going out, make sure that you wear sunscreen. Remember, dry skin is more sensitive than oily skin.

One fun way of taking care of your skin involves chocolates. Yes, rich, dark chocolate that have lots of flavanol. They help in blood circulation and is a good source of anti-oxidants.

It is very easy to just shrug off dry skin. Little do people know that, if left untreated, they can lead to psoriasis and eczema.

Essential Oils for Smoother Skin

The skin, being the largest organ of our body, is sometimes prone to being just set aside and not really taken cared of until a zit breaks out, or dry skins slough off, or cellulite start to form.

One way by which you can take care of your skin is by using Essential Oils. How do you go about this?

First thing's first. Do not attempt to apply essential oils directly to your skin most especially if you have an open wound. This could lead to infection. The proper way to do this is to use a carrier oil like Jojoba oil or almond oil. You could also go for fragrance oils as well as lanolin-free creams and lotions where you could put a drop or two of your essential oil.

Now, which essential oil to use. If you are trying to fight off cellulite, then a lemon essential oils is what you should use. Patchoulis, on the other hand, can be used to even out scars. If you are suffering from Acne, you could use, lavender or Tea Tree Oil as well as Cajeput. You can put a few drops of these essential oils in rose water to serve as a skin toner.

If you are the type of person who has combination skin (certain areas are oily while some are dry), the best way to even out skin condition is to apply essential oils of chamomile, lavender or ylang-ylang.

Suffering from stretch marks? Add one or two drops of Neroli or Lavender oil to a carrier oil and massage the affected area. Keep in mind, however, that rarely do stretch marks completely disappear. They can only become relatively unnoticeable.

A few drops of essential oils from Cypress or Myrrh to your bath can help ease up varicose veins. You can also mix this with a carrier oil and use to massage affected area. The latter is particularly advisable for spider veins.

Essential oils can also help you "erase" wrinkles. Just add about 10 drops of Neroli oil or Frankincense oil to your bath and soak in it. Alternatively, you could also add a few drops to a carrier oil or skin lotion and then use it for massaging affected areas.

These are just some of the ways by which you can use essential oil to achieve a healthy and glowing skin. Keep in mind, however, that prevention is always better than cure. Eating right and having plenty of sunshine and exercise can help keep your skin in healthy condition.

Making Your Own Essential Oils

During the ancient times, preparation of essential oils did not make use of the modern equipments that we have today. It therefore goes without saying that we too can extract our own essential oils. So how do we go about it?

First off, you have to make sure that you have all the needed ingredients as well as materials. You can start with the following:

dried flower petals (1 cup flower = 1 1/2 cup oil)

vegetable oil from sweet almond or apricot kernel (you can also opt for jojoba oil)

measuring cup

a woden spoon

infusion jar

cheesecloth

amber bottle for storage

The first thing that you have to do is place the flower in the infusion jar. Make sure that you have the correct flower as there are different variants to one specie. Your infusion jar could be any large bottle that has a tight lid. Add the cold-pressed vegetable oil and then tightly seal the jar. You have to store this for one to two months. However, you should shake the jar vigorously everyday.
After two months, open the jar and strain the oil from the flower petals. Seal the liquid in an ambr bottle and store in a cool dry place. You may place it in a refrigerator in order to extend shelf life.

Want an instant essential oil? Aromatherapy is essentially about using oils in ensuring the psychological and physical well being of a person. The term aromatherapy can be quite misleading as essential oils need not be inhaled in order to take effect.

Is aromatherapy effective?

Far from being a part of baseless practice, there is actually some science involved in the use of essential oils and, ultimately, in the practice of Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is based on the fact that odors have significant effect on what we feel.

In France, for example, certain essential oils are regulated as drugs and can only be prescribed by a physician. Although never publicly acknowledged as a branch of medicine, several countries such as United States, Russia and Germany already allow essential oils to be placed alongside medicine in their respective pharmacies.

Interested in buying essential oils? It is one of the forces that move us around. Stress is usually classified into two - Eustress and Distress. Eustress (true stress) allows us to perform better while Distress (bad stress) weakens us eventually resulting to various health-related conditions.

Stress affects four areas of our lives - physical, mental, emotional, and behavioral areas. When you are stressed, you would notice that you have palpitations, you become irritable and restless, you have dyspepsia.

So how do we deal with this? Here are some stress management steps to keep fatigue at bay:

1. Be aware of the early signs and symptopms of stress. Are you becoming irritable? Do you suffer from diarrhea? Are you experiencing feelings of guilt, anger, anxiety or depression? Are you becoming hyperacidic? Alone, these symptoms could be indicative of other medical conditions. Together, however, they could be indicative of stress.

2. Stay away from stressors. Avoid overcommitting and learn the art of delegation. Keep in mind that you can only do so much. Let other people handle things that are beyond your skills. Learn to say "no". Oftentimes, we are ashamed to say "no" that we often find ourselves overworked.

3. Time Management. Learn to balance your time among family, work, leisure and friends.

4. Learn to relax your mind and body. Set aside some time for yourself. Sleep at least 7 to 8 hours a day. Try aromatherapy to soothe your mind.

5. Exercise regularly and eat nutritious food.

6. Allow yourself to have some fun. Oftentimes, we are too caught up with our work that we forget to have time for some fun.

7. Find someone who can give you support and then share your feelings with him or her. This creates a catharsis for all your pent-up emotions.

Still stressed out? Go check Essential Feel Goods and find an essential oil that could calm down your nerves.

Using Essential Oils Safely

There are various ways by which one can use essential oils- a few drops on one's bath, applied to the skin along with a carrier oil or a few drops on your incense burner. Regardless on how the essential oil is used, care should always be taken. Here are some tips on how to safely use essential oils:

Make sure that you are not allergic to it by doing a patch test. Place a few drops on your arm and leave for 24 hours. If no swelling, redness and/ or itchiness appears, then you are not allergic to it. Make sure you don't use oils that you are sensitive to.

Never apply essential oils directly to your skin. Use carrier oils or any pure vegetable oil to prevent any skin irritation.

Menthol-rich essential oils should not be used on the neck of children under three years of age.

Oils that would be added to bath waters should be mixed first with a dispersing agent.

Never take them internally.

If you have a medical condition (hypertension, epilepsy, liver problems) or are pregnant, check first with your doctor before using any essential oil. Because of their nature, care should be taken when handling them.

Essential Oils should not be ingested. It should also not be applied directly to the skin as this could cause irritation. The best way to apply them to your skin is with the use of carrier oils such as almond or olive. If transferring essential oils, make use of latex gloves and disposable pipettes.

They should be stored away from direct sunlight and should be kept in amber bottles with tight lid. As with any other type of oil, Essential Oils are affected (degraded) by extreme temperatures.

Citrus oils should not be kept more than 6 months. They have a tendency to go rancid over time. Patchouli oils and sandalwood, on the other hand, get better as time passes by. Once your essential oils has become cloudy or has started giving off a rancid smell, you have to dispose it.

To know more about the different Essential Oils, visit the Essential Feel Goods web site.

Interested in back links? This means that they are organic and lack the synthetic nature of a fragrance oil. But how does one exactly extract essential oils from these plants?

The most common way of producing essential oils is through steam distillation. This method involves the use of steam and a chamber to hold the raw plant. The steam is allowed to flow through the chamber causing the sacs containing the oil to burst. This steam and oil both go out of the chamber into a chilled condenser where the steam becomes water. At this point, the water (aka "hydrosol" ) is separated from the oil.

The extraction chamber cannot have a very high temperature as well as pressure. High temperature and pressure can affect the molecular structure of the oil in a negative way causing it to, at worst, be destroyed.
Another method of extracting oils, and probably the simplest, is through "cold pressing". In this method, the rind is pressed at 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the particular method used when extracting oils from Bergamot, Orange and Lemon.

Just like producing the finest wine, essential oil extraction takes time. It requires a lot of patience and skill.

Essential oils and Pregnancy

Many people relate essential oils and aromatherapy with massages, soothing baths, and oil-based perfumes. Little do people know that, aside from their calming effect, essential oils are now also being used for inducing birth.

As with the stages of pregnancy, labor is also divided into three phases – the early phase, the active phase, and the transitional phase. The early phase is characterized by the start of mild contractions. During this phase, the use of Neroli and Lavender can help you to relax and free yourself from apprehensions. The active phase, on the other hand, is characterized by longer and more frequent contractions. A combination of Lavender oil, Neroli oil and Rose oil can effectively bring you relaxation especially when massaged on the chest and the neck. During the third phase, you will experience intense and fast contractions. In order to ready yourself for childbirth, you can massage your back with a combination of Lavender, Sage and Peppermint. A combination of Peppermint and Rosemary can also give you enough strength for that final push.

There are also other essential oils that could help you during child birth. Here are some of them:

Bergamot, Grapefruit, and Lemon – when diffused, can help you to relax. Also good for unsettled stomach

Ylang-Ylang – effective for lowering blood pressure

Rose – helps the muscles to relax. Not recommended for those who are in their 1st and 2nd trimester of pregnancy as it may cause miscarriage.

Keep in mind, however, that use of these essential oils should first be checked with your doctor.

For more information visit Essential Feel Goods.

Essential Oils Vs. Fragrance Oils

Although it is very much tempting to use 'essential oils' and 'fragrance oils' interchangeably, the two words actually do not mean the same thing.

In reality, essential oils are not true oils. They are natural, distilled chemical extracts from various plant parts. They are highly fragrant and has a tendency to evaporate quite easily. They tend to be more concentrated thus, a little goes a long way.

Fragrance oils, on the other hand, can sometimes be a combination of essential oils and synthetic compounds. Although they might possess the same smell as an aromatic oil, they never have the same effect since they do not have the same properties as a true essential oil.

Knowing the difference can guide you in making better purchasing decisions when it comes to your aromatherapy needs.

Want to know the different essential oils? Active and energetic people are the ones who are usually prone to this condition. This is where the use of Essential Oils like the following can help you:

Camomile
- one of the most sedative oils, Camomile can be used along with other herbs in your incense burner. You can also try drinking camomile tea before going to sleep.

Patchouli
- the Patchouli is a member of the mint family. The oil of this plant emits a deep, earthy and musky fragrance that allows for the calming of nerves. Just like other oils, the Patchouli oil can be diluted in your bath water.

Sandalwood
- Sandalwood prduces a soft, warm, woody, and balsamic fragrance. It comes from the roots and heartwood of trees.

Marjoram
- if insomnia is caused by over-excitement, the oil of marjoram can be of help. This oil is extracted from the dried leaves and flowering tops of the marjoram plant. This can be used in burners or vaporizers, blended with carrier oils, or blended in your bath water.

If you do not have burners, you can put three to four drops of your chosen oil on your handkerchief. Place this then under your pillow. As the oil diffuses, the released vapors would help put you to sleep.

For more information on the different essential oils, get in touch with Essential Feel Goods.

Essential Oils To Uplift Your Spirits

Depression is an emotional state wherein one has feelings of hopelessness or 'intense' sadness. This could be triggered by a number of reasons including:

- death of a loved one
- a painful physical event including attacks by a known or unknown person
- break-up with a loved one
- major financial problem
- major change in one's way of living
- bad eating habits leading to lower self-esteem
- bad day at the office/ school

Simple depression, however, could be avoided. Here are some oils that have been proven to uplift spirits:

Bergamot - this essential oil comes from the pressed bitter orange peels.

Neroli - like Bergamot, this comes from bitter oranges. However, with Neroli, you use the flowers.

German and Roman Chamomile - the essential oil is extracted from the flowers. They have a rich apple scent that can take away bitterness and a brooding mood.

Rosewood - Rosewood has a warm and woody scent. It comes from a Brazilian Evergreen tree

You could combine two drops of of Rosewood with two drops of Bergamot and two drops of Ylang-Ylang. You can use this as a fragrance or you could also smell it directly from the bottle.

If you don't know where to get these essential oils, visit Essential Feel Goods.

The Essential Oils for Headache

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 166px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_m8QJXNlLv2A/SSgOzzJE16I/AAAAAAAAAAw/r1AJby1Usu8/s320/blue_oil_bottle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271479646901557154" />
We have all suffered from headache at one point in our lives. It could last for just a few minutes to a few days. One of the leading cause of headache is tension and stress. Here are some sure-fire ways of treating headache using essential oils:

- Mix Lavender with a carrier oil like almond oil, sunflower oil or grapeseed oil and massage around the temples, neck and shoulders
- If you do not like to have a massage, put a few drops of Lavender oil to your handkerchief which you could sniff out every now and then or until the paid subsides
- You could also put a few drops into your bath

Essential oils very rarely have side effects as they were extracted from plants. As you would notice, I have used Lavender oil in my suggestions. This is because Lavender Oil is the gentlest and safest essential oil.It cannot, however, be used on children.

If you would like to know more about the different essential oils, visit Essential Feel Goods.

Aromatherapy: A History of the World

Few people realize how closely the history of Aromatherapy and the history of the world is closely intertwined. For some, aromatherapy is just somthing that people do to calm their nerves and soothe their bodies.

Since time immemorial, people have long known the powers that the different herbs, spices and oils hold. The history of Aromatherapy actually dates back 3,500 years before the birth of Christ. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, also used infusion of herbs in treating his patients.

Today, aromatherapy has been widely used as an alternative medicine of choice by most people. It has also been closely linked with spa treatments and is seen by many as a form of caring for one's self.

To know more about the different ways by which you can let aromatherapy take care of you, visit Essential Feel Goods
